Blog Post 9 – Evaluation

To conclude my choreographic process, I am very pleased with how my solo was performed and I think I maintained the essence of well thought out motifs throughout. As mentioned previously, I set out to create a piece which was focussed on Dyslexia and the challenges that I have faced with it. Furthermore, when developing this piece, I wanted to convey the message of how I process information and that it may take longer for me to retain information but my dedication to dance means that I will always try to work harder to retain choreography and overcome any challenges I face. Overall, I am very positive about this experience and I think it taught me a lot about myself whilst giving me more confidence to express myself in a very personal and meaningful way. Embracing this module was very mentally difficult for me as I have never had the opportunity to portray my emotions and the physicality towards this subject but I am grateful for having the experience to not feel ashamed about it due...

Blog Post 8 - Personal development & Reflection

In this blog I will be reflecting on my process so far and how I have developed my choreography by taking on feedback and what challenges I have faced. Upon reflection I have realised that there I have not highlighted moments where I can express deep emotions that show how I feel in that moment. from this I will adapt the 'Time' section to have a moment of struggle that focuses the attention towards the feeling of having Dyslexia in dance to reinterpret my stimulus. One of the main challenges I have faced is connecting each section together as I have found that I struggle to find the correct balance of movement going from one phrase to another. Whilst maintaining the style of the previous piece I have tried to contrast this into the next phrase by using different dynamics and different levels. Without the in between sections this has impacted my thought process as I have been choreographing due to the indecisiveness prior to that section. To overcome this I have started with ...

Blog Post 7- Practitioner Study 2

At the start of Piece 2: 'Woolf Works' there is a background of waves with an aural accompaniment of a women talking. (Royal Opera House, 2020) The aural accompaniment is a women speaking in a calm tone however the words that she is saying sound troubled. At 2 minutes 14 seconds the camera shows a women standing on stage in a brown leotard and a transparent long brown skirt with her eyes closed and an emotionless expression. There is a juxtaposition with the costumes as b rown is a humble colour and functions as a warm neutral colour. Whereas, the piece is a very melancholy dance as it is portraying a sad part of reality that unfortunately occurs.  At 2 minutes 48 seconds the female dancer is joined by a male dancer who is wearing black leggings. The male dancer is topless to perhaps show the strength and lines behind his movements. There is a continuity of the aural accompaniment as the two dancers perform their duet. The female dancer is wearing pointe sh...

Blog Post 6- A reflection of my choreographic process so far

Image
My choreographic process so far is going well and I feel very productive during the lessons, which my teacher has come to me and said. I have edited my music to 9 minutes and 30 seconds, I think the blend from each piece is very appropriate for the messaging coming across at that point. For example the composition into ‘Samurai Fight’ is a very sudden introduction which is ideal as the section for this music is very jolted and fast dynamics to replicate the uncomfortable thought process. In total I have 4.5 minutes of choreography however, this is separated into different sections during the solo. Focusing on choreographic methods has worked very efficiently as it gives a structure on what I can work on however an area for improvement is time management. At this current moment I feel very prepared for the new year however over the Christmas break I will not have any studio time which will make it harder to get in the choreographic mindset. To take this as an opportunity I will reflect ...

Blog Post 5- Practitioner study

At the start of Piece 1: Atomos the lighting is red, green and blue- 2 of which are primary colours. In this piece there is a lot of partner work, some of which is same gender lifts and duets. In the first section movement is viscous, slow and leisurely. At 14 minutes there is a duet performed by a male and female dancer who incorporate every part of their body to lead them into another movement. There are moments where you see the extensions of the female dancer whilst being held by the strong male dancer. At 20 minutes there is a contrast in dynamics performed by another duet as their movements are sharp and powerful. In this the lighting is mostly red. At 45 minutes lines become more distinct, there is a change of expression from the dancers and you can see there is more intensity behind the movement.  Watching this piece of choreography, I thought that the parts fit together well. Although in some of the sections there is an obvious fit/ flow into the next section there are a...

Blog Post 4- Choreographic devices/ Motif Development

To develop from my stimulus, I have focused my motifs to have clear motion thus presenting a clear narrative to the audience. Some examples of choreographic devices that I have used within the piece are, embellishment, fragmentation, instrumentation, repetition, beat, choreographic structure, narrative structure, motif development, retrograde. Below I have attached videos of examples of using these devices within my choreography. Using these devices has intensified the communication of the stimulus to the audience which has created the desired impact for the piece.   Embellishment:   Sylvia Hall- Embellishment Instrumentation:   Sylvia Hall- Instrumentation Repetition:   Sylvia Hall- Repetition Beat:   Sylvia Hall- Beat Motif development:   Sylvia Hall- Motif Development Mirror: Sylvia Hall- Mirror

Blog Post 3- Your chosen practitioner

My chosen practitioner is Wayne Mcgregor because I am intrigued by his creative process and his artistic brilliance. Before I was able to experience the creative process that he uses I would think that his choreography process is interesting however, I never fully understood the task. After trying his method I have found that it suits me very well because it helps me explore my mind but also it is an efficient way of creating choreography. Wayne Mcgregors work is very extraordinary because he likes to think that creating choreography is physical thinking. He also uses a lot of imagery to show in his movement. For example, imagining the letter "T" and thinking that he is inside the T. When choreographing for his dancers, he likes to use improvisation so that his dancers can take an idea from a body and transfer it into another body. The dancers aren't given music, they respond to his counting such as the words "um, bay, bay, a". Another way he works with his ...
